How to calculate engagement

Four numbers, one clear rate.

  1. 1Open the video in YouTube Studio or on YouTube and note its views, likes, comments, and shares.
  2. 2Enter the four numbers from the same point in time.
  3. 3Read the overall engagement rate, like rate, and total interactions.

The formula

Engagement rate = interactions ÷ views × 100

  • Overall engagement rate
  • Total interactions (likes + comments + shares)
  • Like rate (likes ÷ views)
  • A quick benchmark reading
  • Works for long videos and Shorts

Example: 400 likes, 60 comments, and 25 shares on 10,000 views is 485 interactions, or a 4.85% engagement rate.

Compare like with like

Shorts, long videos, and live streams behave differently. Compare engagement against your own videos of the same format.

Rough benchmarks

As a rule of thumb, 1–5% is common and above 5% is strong. Your niche and audience size shift what is normal.

Shares are not public

Share counts appear only in YouTube Studio analytics. If you are measuring someone else’s video, use likes and comments only.

Common questions

YouTube engagement rate FAQ

Formulas, benchmarks, and what the number means.

How is YouTube engagement rate calculated?

Add likes, comments, and shares, divide by views, and multiply by 100. For example, 485 interactions on 10,000 views is a 4.85% engagement rate.

What is a good engagement rate on YouTube?

Many videos land between 1% and 5%. Above 5% is generally strong. Smaller channels and tight-knit niches often see higher rates than very large channels.

Can I calculate engagement for someone else’s video?

Yes, using the public view, like, and comment counts. Shares are only visible to the channel owner, so leave shares at zero for other channels’ videos.

Why is my engagement rate low?

A low rate can mean a video reached many casual viewers, such as through browse or suggested traffic. Clear calls to comment and questions for viewers can help.
