How to download a YouTube thumbnail

  1. 01Paste a YouTube watch link, youtu.be link, Shorts link, embed link, or the 11-character video ID.
  2. 02Select Get thumbnails. Cutlark checks each public image size YouTube serves for that video.
  3. 03Download the largest available version, or choose a smaller size that fits your workflow.

No YouTube API quota is used.

The downloader reads public thumbnail files using the video ID. It does not need access to your YouTube account.

YouTube thumbnail sizes

YouTube documents five standard video-thumbnail variants. Max resolution and standard are available only for some videos.

Creators can upload larger artwork, but this tool downloads the public variants YouTube currently serves. Its documented max-resolution video variant is 1280 x 720.

Choose the clearest copy

Start with the max-resolution variant when it exists. For quick references or compact layouts, a smaller version may load faster.

Understand the variants

These are public images served by YouTube. They are not necessarily the untouched source file originally uploaded by the creator.

Use images responsibly

Downloading a thumbnail does not transfer copyright. Reuse only artwork you own, have permission to use, or may legally use.

YouTube thumbnail downloader FAQ

Not every video has every thumbnail size. Cutlark automatically shows only the versions that are available.

How do I download a YouTube thumbnail?

Paste a public YouTube watch URL, youtu.be link, Shorts URL, embed URL, or 11-character video ID into the tool. Select Get thumbnails, then download the best available YouTube-served image from the results.

What YouTube thumbnail sizes can I download?

Cutlark checks the standard YouTube video thumbnail variants: 1280 x 720 max resolution, 640 x 480 standard, 480 x 360 high, 320 x 180 medium, and 120 x 90 default. YouTube does not provide every variant for every video.

Why is the 1280 x 720 thumbnail missing?

The max-resolution and standard variants are available only for some videos. When one is unavailable, Cutlark shows the highest-resolution thumbnail that YouTube currently serves for that video.

Does the downloader work with YouTube Shorts?

Yes. Paste the Shorts URL and Cutlark will read its video ID and check the public thumbnail variants connected to it. The image YouTube displays in a particular feed can still vary by device and surface.

Can I reuse a thumbnail downloaded from YouTube?

Downloading an image does not grant permission to reuse it. Use thumbnails you own, have permission to use, or are otherwise legally allowed to use. The original creator may hold copyright in the artwork.

Thumbnail file guide

Every image YouTube keeps for a video

The thumbnail you see on YouTube is only one of several image files YouTube stores for each video. This guide maps the full set, explains why a download can differ from what viewers see, shows creators how to recover lost artwork, and gives a simple routine for studying thumbnails that worked.

Which image files does YouTube store for each video?

Each video has a set of images at i.ytimg.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/. Some show the thumbnail viewers see; others are frames taken from the video itself. We requested every common file name for a well-known public video to confirm what exists and how large each image is.

Image files YouTube served for one public video (checked October 2026)
File nameSizeWhat it shows
maxresdefault.jpg1280 × 720The thumbnail in full HD, when the source is large enough
hq720.jpg1280 × 720A second full-HD copy of the same thumbnail
sddefault.jpg640 × 480The thumbnail in a 4:3 frame with black bars
hqdefault.jpg and 0.jpg480 × 360The thumbnail in a 4:3 frame with black bars
mqdefault.jpg320 × 180The thumbnail at 16:9, with no bars
default.jpg120 × 90The smallest thumbnail, 4:3 with bars
1.jpg, 2.jpg, 3.jpg120 × 90Small frames captured from the video itself
hq1–hq3, mq1, sd1, maxres1320 × 180 to 1280 × 720Larger versions of those video frames
In the 4:3 files, the black bars above and below a 16:9 thumbnail take up 25% of the image height.

Is there a smaller WebP version of each thumbnail?

Yes. Replace /vi/ with /vi_webp/ and .jpg with .webp to get the same images in WebP format. In our check, the full-HD WebP file was 57% smaller than the JPG (27 KB instead of 63 KB), and the 480 × 360 version was 50% smaller.

That difference matters if you show YouTube thumbnails on your own site, such as in a video gallery or blog post, because smaller images load faster on mobile connections.

Why does a downloaded thumbnail sometimes differ from what YouTube shows?

  • A thumbnail test is running. Creators can A/B test up to three titles and thumbnails, so different viewers see different versions until the one with the most watch time is kept.
  • The creator changed it recently. Image servers and browsers cache files, so an older version can linger for a while after an update.
  • You opened a 4:3 size. The 480 × 360 and 640 × 480 files add black bars above and below a widescreen image.
  • You saved a video frame. The numbered files are stills from the video, not the artwork the creator uploaded.

How can creators recover a lost thumbnail?

If the original design file is gone, your published video still holds a copy. Paste the video link into the downloader and save the largest size listed, usually 1280 × 720. That is enough to reuse the artwork in a community post or as the starting point for a redesign.

How do you study thumbnails that worked?

  1. Collect the thumbnails of a channel’s strongest and weakest recent videos and lay them side by side.
  2. Shrink them to search-result size and note which ones still read clearly.
  3. Count the words on each, and compare faces, colors, and how much of the frame the main subject fills.
  4. Describe the pattern in your own words, then design something new around it instead of copying the image.
