How to generate tags

One keyword, a full tag set.

  1. 1Enter the main keyword your video targets, such as “home workout”.
  2. 2Generate a set of up to 18 related tags built from that keyword.
  3. 3Remove any that do not fit the video, then copy the rest into YouTube Studio.

What the set covers

Exact, broad, and long-tail tags

  • The exact keyword and a no-space version
  • How-to, tutorial, and beginner variations
  • Tips, tricks, guide, and review variations
  • A current-year variation
  • Character count against the 500 limit

YouTube Studio limits the tags field to 500 characters in total, so the running count helps you trim before you paste.

Tags are a small signal

YouTube says tags play a minimal role in discovery. They are most useful for common misspellings and variations of your main keyword.

Stay relevant

Only keep tags that describe the video. Irrelevant tags do not help and can conflict with YouTube’s spam policies.

Title and description first

Your title, thumbnail, and description do far more for discovery than tags. Spend most of your effort there.

Common questions

YouTube tags FAQ

Limits, relevance, and how much tags really matter.

How many tags can a YouTube video have?

YouTube limits the tags field to 500 characters in total rather than a fixed number of tags. Commas between tags count toward that limit.

Do YouTube tags still help with SEO?

Only a little. YouTube states that tags have a minimal role in discovery and are mainly helpful when your topic is commonly misspelled. Titles, thumbnails, and descriptions matter much more.

Where do I add tags on YouTube?

Open the video in YouTube Studio, select Details, and expand Show more. The Tags field is there. Paste your comma-separated list and save.

Can I see another video’s tags?

Yes, when the creator has added them. Use the YouTube Tag Extractor to read the published tags of any public video.

Tag writing guide

Building a tag list that earns its place

Tags are the smallest part of a video’s metadata, so the goal is a short, accurate list rather than a long one. This guide shows exactly what the generator builds from one keyword, walks through trimming that list, explains when tags genuinely help, and lists the mistakes that waste the 500-character limit.

What does the tag generator build from one keyword?

Here is the generator’s full output for “home workout”, grouped by the kind of search each tag covers.

Together, the 18 tags use 338 of YouTube’s 500 characters — 68% of the limit, counting the commas between tags.

Worked example: trimming the list before you paste it

  • “hometips” uses only the first word of the keyword, so it is too vague to describe this video.
  • “homeworkouttips” is a joined spelling that few people type.
  • “home workout at home” repeats the keyword without adding meaning.

Removing those three leaves 15 tags using 292 characters (58% of the limit), with room for one or two specific tags of your own, such as the equipment or routine length featured in your video.

When are YouTube tags actually worth adding?

YouTube says the title, thumbnail, and description matter more for discovery, and that tags play a minimal role unless the topic is commonly misspelled. In practice, tags earn their place in a few situations:

  • The topic is often misspelled or written as one word and as two.
  • A name has several accepted spellings, such as a brand, a place, or a person.
  • Your audience searches in more than one script, for example a Hindi topic typed in English letters.
  • You run a series and want its name attached to every episode.

Which tag mistakes waste the 500 characters?

  • Near-duplicates such as “home workout”, “home workouts”, and “workout home”, which spend characters on almost the same search.
  • Single broad words like “fitness” that describe millions of videos and none of them specifically.
  • Tags about other creators or topics that the video does not cover.
  • Stuffing tags into the description. YouTube’s help center says adding excessive tags to a description breaks its spam, deceptive practices, and scams policies.
