YouTube Watch Time Calculator

The YouTube Watch Time Calculator turns monthly views and average view duration into watch hours, then shows how long it will take to reach 4,000 hours, or the 8,000 hours new applicants need from February 2027, and how many daily views each target takes.

How to calculate watch time

Know your pace toward 4,000 or 8,000 hours.

  1. 1Find your monthly views and average view duration in YouTube Studio analytics.
  2. 2Enter views and the duration as m:ss or h:mm:ss, such as 3:00.
  3. 3See monthly watch hours, the months to each target, and the daily views needed.

The formula

Watch hours = views × average view duration

  • Monthly watch hours
  • Months to 4,000 hours and to 8,000 hours
  • Daily views needed for each target
  • Accepts m:ss and h:mm:ss durations
  • Instant, private browser calculation

Example: 10,000 monthly views at a 3:00 average view duration is 500 watch hours a month — eight months to 4,000 hours, or 16 months to 8,000.

Long-form hours only

For the YouTube Partner Program watch-hour path, views from Shorts do not count toward the 4,000 public watch hours.

Rolling 12 months

Eligibility uses watch hours from the last 12 months, so older hours drop off. A steady monthly pace matters more than one spike.

Duration is a lever

Raising average view duration grows watch hours without needing more views. Stronger intros and pacing help most.

Common questions

YouTube watch time FAQ

How watch hours are counted and what 4,000 or 8,000 hours takes.

How do I calculate YouTube watch hours?

Multiply views by average view duration in seconds, then divide by 3,600. For example, 10,000 views × 180 seconds ÷ 3,600 = 500 hours.

How many views do I need for 4,000 watch hours?

It depends on average view duration. At a 3-minute average you need about 80,000 views in 12 months for 4,000 hours, or 160,000 for 8,000; at 6 minutes, about 40,000 or 80,000. The calculator shows the daily views needed for your duration.

Do Shorts views count toward 4,000 watch hours?

No. The 4,000-hour requirement counts valid public watch hours from long-form videos. Shorts have a separate eligibility path based on Shorts views.

Is the watch-hour requirement changing in 2027?

Yes, for new applicants. New applications from February 1, 2027 require 8,000 watch hours over the past 365 days, double today’s 4,000. Channels already in the program keep their status, but must stay active, for example with 1,000 watch hours a year.

Where do I find my average view duration?

In YouTube Studio, open Analytics and select the Engagement tab or Advanced mode. Average view duration is shown for the channel and for each video.

Planning your path to 4,000 or 8,000 watch hours

Watch hours are the long-form route into the YouTube Partner Program, and the target is changing. This guide shows how many views each target takes at different view durations, which target applies to your channel, why your total can fall, and how to use YouTube’s retention report to raise average view duration.

How many views do you need for 4,000 or 8,000 watch hours?

The number of views you need depends almost entirely on average view duration. The table assumes every view counts toward the target, which only happens for public long-form videos.

Views needed by average view duration
Average view durationViews for 4,000 hoursViews for 8,000 hoursViews a day for 8,000 in a year
1 minute240,000480,0001,316
2 minutes120,000240,000658
3 minutes80,000160,000439
5 minutes48,00096,000264
8 minutes30,00060,000165
10 minutes24,00048,000132

Doubling average view duration halves the views you need. The gains are biggest for short videos: moving from 2 to 3 minutes cuts the views needed by 33%, and moving from 5 to 8 minutes cuts them by 38%.

Which watch-hour target applies to your channel?

  • Applying up to January 31, 2027: 4,000 qualified public watch hours over the past 12 months, plus 1,000 subscribers.
  • Applying from February 1, 2027: 8,000 qualified watch hours over the past 365 days, plus 1,000 subscribers.
  • Already in the program: from February 2027, about 1,000 watch hours a year is one of the ways to count as active, alongside the Shorts-view and upload options.
  • Fan funding and Shopping only: 3,000 watch hours in the past year with 500 subscribers, unchanged in 2027.

Why does my watch-hour total go down?

  • The window rolls. Only the past 12 months count, so hours from an older hit drop out on the anniversary of when they were earned.
  • Videos were made private, unlisted, or deleted, which removes their hours from the total.
  • Some viewing never counted: Shorts in the Shorts Feed, ad-campaign views, and live streams that were not saved as videos.

Because of the rolling window, a steady monthly pace is more reliable than a single viral month. Use the calculator’s monthly figure to check that pace rather than the lifetime total.

How do you raise average view duration?

YouTube’s audience retention report shows where viewers stay and leave. Open it from YouTube Studio by selecting Content, choosing a video, opening Analytics, and looking under the Overview or Engagement tab. New data usually takes 1–2 days to appear.

  • Intro: the share of viewers still watching after the first 30 seconds. A weak intro often means the opening does not match the title and thumbnail.
  • Dips: moments where viewers skip or leave. Tighten or cut those sections in future videos.
  • Spikes: moments people rewatch or share. Make more of what happens there, and bring it earlier.
  • Typical retention: compares the video with your 10 latest videos of similar length, so you can see whether a change helped.

Where do you track progress toward the target?

The Earn section of YouTube Studio is the official place to follow Partner Program eligibility. Select Get notified there, and YouTube emails you once your channel meets a threshold.

The calculator above is for planning: it shows the pace your current views and duration produce, and how long each target takes at that pace.
