How to write a YouTube title

Ten angles on the same video.

  1. 1Describe the video in a short phrase, such as “edit videos on a phone”.
  2. 2Pick a style: a mix of everything, curiosity, how-to, listicle, or search-friendly.
  3. 3Generate ideas, compare character counts, and adapt the strongest one to your video.

Title styles

Four ways to frame a video

  • Curiosity — “The Truth About…”
  • How-to — “How to… (Step by Step)”
  • Listicle — “7 … Tips That Actually Work”
  • Search-friendly — “… Complete Tutorial”
  • Character count on every idea

YouTube allows up to 100 characters, but search results and suggested videos often show only the first part, so lead with the words that matter.

Front-load the topic

Put the main subject in the first few words. Viewers scanning search results decide quickly, and long titles may be truncated.

Match the thumbnail

The title and thumbnail should work together. Let the thumbnail show the moment and the title add the context it cannot.

Deliver the promise

A title that overpromises can win the click and lose the viewer. Choose the idea your video genuinely answers.

Common questions

YouTube title FAQ

Length, keywords, and what makes a title work.

How long should a YouTube title be?

YouTube allows titles up to 100 characters. Shorter titles are easier to read in full on mobile and in search, so many creators keep the essential words within roughly the first 60 characters.

Should I put keywords in my YouTube title?

Yes, when it reads naturally. Using the words people actually search helps YouTube understand the video, but a clear promise to the viewer matters more than repeating keywords.

What title style gets the most views?

It depends on the audience. Tutorials often suit direct how-to titles, while entertainment tends to use curiosity. Test different styles over several uploads and compare click-through rate in YouTube Studio.

Can I change a title after publishing?

Yes. You can edit a video title at any time in YouTube Studio. Some creators adjust titles when a video’s click-through rate is lower than their channel average.

Title writing guide

From generated idea to a title worth clicking

A title generator gives you angles; the final title still has to fit your video and your thumbnail. This guide compares the four styles the generator writes, measures how long its ideas run, explains how titles and thumbnails work together, and shows how to test titles with YouTube’s own A/B testing.

Checked against YouTube’s official help pages on

Which title style should you choose?

Each style suits a different kind of video. The table shows how many ideas the generator holds for each style and what they look like for the topic “budget travel”.

Title styles in the generator, measured on “budget travel”
StyleIdeasExampleAverage length
Curiosity6Nobody Talks About This Budget Travel Trick43 characters
How-to6How to budget travel (Step by Step)35 characters
Listicle57 Budget Travel Tips That Actually Work43 characters
Search-friendly5Budget Travel — Complete Tutorial (1970)39 characters
  • Curiosity suits stories, experiments, and opinion videos where the payoff is the reason to watch.
  • How-to suits tutorials that answer a problem people type into search.
  • Listicle suits tips, mistakes, and roundups that can be scanned in chapters.
  • Search-friendly suits evergreen topics people look up by name year after year.

How long should a YouTube title be?

YouTube accepts titles of up to 100 characters, but how much shows depends on the device and where the video appears, so the words that matter should come first.

With the sample topic, all 22 of the generator’s ideas stay within 60 characters (100%). The longest template adds 43 characters around your topic, so a topic of up to 17 characters keeps every idea within 60. Longer topics still work; just check the character count shown beside each idea.

How should a title work with the thumbnail?

  • Let them do different jobs: the thumbnail shows the moment, and the title adds the context or stakes the image cannot.
  • Avoid repeating the thumbnail text word for word in the title; the space is too valuable to say the same thing twice.
  • Keep the promise consistent with the opening of the video. YouTube’s retention report notes that a strong intro percentage can mean the first 30 seconds matched what the title and thumbnail led viewers to expect.

Can you A/B test YouTube titles?

Yes. YouTube lets creators test and compare up to three titles and thumbnails on a video. When the test ends, the title, or title-and-thumbnail combination, with the highest watch time is shown to every viewer. Tests are set up from YouTube Studio on a computer.

How do you turn a generated idea into your final title?

  1. Shortlist two or three ideas whose angle matches what the video actually delivers.
  2. Swap generic words for specifics from your video: a number, a name, a place, or a result.
  3. Move the main search words toward the front.
  4. Read it next to your thumbnail and check that together they make one clear promise.
  5. Run the strongest two or three as an A/B test and let watch time pick the winner.
